Global growing season map

You have just started your studies of farming in the 'Rural' section of the course and before looking at the three case study farming types, Mrs W has been teaching you about global patterns of farming. One of the most important factors in determining the type of faming which will be practised anywhere in the world is the length of the growing season.

In the UK, the length of the growing season is largely determined by temperature. However, as you can see from the map, we actually have a longer growing season than many areas which are closer to the equator. Temperature, therefore is not the only factor which will influence the number of days in a year during which crops can be grown.

Look at the map above and try to work out what the other factors might be! Then you might consider SE Asia and Australasia (for which no data is available on the map). What would the growing season map look like for those areas? If you click on the map, it will open as a larger version and you will be able to read the key more clearly.
